"Uh-Huh" marks a slightly different turn for Choctaw Wildfire. While maintaining the lyrical intensity, deep brooding vocals, and eclectic mix of styles that the band has come to be known for, it has a decidedly New Orleans influence garnered from multiple tours throughout Louisiana. The album was recorded and engineered by Justin Douglas at King Electric studios and mixed by John Potoker here in Austin. It was mastered in Nashville at True East by Alex McCollough. The new album features the core band of Charlie Pierce (keys, vocals), Leland Potter (drums), Wil Landin (tuba, bass), Jeffrey Barnes (clarinet, saxophone), and Spencer Jarmon (guitar). In addition, Michael St. Clair (trombone), Derek Phelps (trumpet), Kullen Fuchs (trumpet), and Zach Varner (clarinet, saxophone) round out the horn section.

Released May 26th 2015, Nowhere was recorded at Arlyn Studio in Austin, TX by head engineer/producer Jacob Sciba (Willie Nelson, Warren Haynes, Gary Clark, Jr.) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (The White Stripes, Beastie Boys, Nirvana). Nowhere features some of Austin's finest talent including musical guests Danny Hawk on pedal steel and multi-instrumentalist Bobby Flores of The Yellow Rose Band. The tracks were blessed with a mix-down on Willie’s magical SSL console providing Nowhere with deep mojo, classic familiarity, and a timeless sound. Just like the songs themselves, the recording hides nothing and has nothing to hide. All is laid bare. The piano, vocals, bass, and drums were tracked live in a single session and in that moment magic happened. We are so excited to share these songs with you!

The opening “Daggers” is a highlight, with Pierce’s clear baritone vocals bringing to life the desperation and regret in the lyrics.

REVIEWED BY GREG BEETS, Austin Chronicle FRI., JUNE 19, 2015

Don't let the Spartan line drawing on the cover fool you. Piano-bashing Michigan transplant Charlie Pierce's second album with Choctaw Wildfire burns with richly layered sonic drama. Alternating between stiff-lipped desolation and inconsolable longing, Nowhere transforms solitary soul crises into Gothic Americana epics writ large across darkening skies. Pierce's calloused barrel-house bluster provides the fulcrum, and his ambitious arrangements give each song its own unique color. "Daggers" summons Bob Dylan's Nashville Skylinevia the Rolling Thunder Revue with its jaunty, twang-laden take on end-stage resignation. The title track is a wistful shuffle exquisitely accented by Danny Hawk's pedal steel, while "Save His Soul at Last" sidesteps maudlin sentiment to serve up an elongated, weather-beaten take on George Jones' broken man pathos. "Mean" sluices murder balladry through a tuba- and clarinet-infused cabaret jazz arrangement. Pierce's softer side emerges on "Ruby," a bucolic elegy he wrote in tribute to the late mother of a newfound fan. Replete with tenderness and vivid Hill Country imagery, it's easy to hear why the family wound up commissioning this recording.

A special thanks to Young Cubs Records for believing in us and helping to make this happen.
